I am a photographer who worked as a filmmaker for most of my creative life. And, now it seems natural to infuse my “still” photography with longer exposures that can capture movement and spread light and colour. I believe that a “motivated” camera follows the impulse of the image maker in response to the image. Therein you see an image not perhaps depicted as reality but interpreted by the vision of the artist, and in that I hope you see my response to nature as she breathes.
It is my hope that these images will wash over us, begging us to walk gently on the earth and to safeguard our environment for the generations to come.
The technique I use is traditional, simply a longer exposure. It is born of a belief that when we abstract through the lens (as I do) imagery of the real world is captured and infused with the response of the photographer.
I strongly believe that camera movement alone will not yield a special image. An exceptional image must be there to start with, then with movement and a longer exposure one can learn to enhance what one sees in a manner that expresses what one feels. This is simply one technique in traditional photography. And, it is the one that has allowed me to follow and attempt to capture what I see as nature’s breath.
