Date: December, 2012
Location: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, HI, USA
Description: We could see the red glow well before we actually reached the flowing lava and this became much brighter as we made our way over the rough terrain towards our final destination. I was feeling excited and anxious and this feeling intensified as we got closer to the lava field. Cresting the last high point and seeing the actual lava field for the first time is something I will never forget. A few photographers had arrived before us and they were set up along the cliff edge with their cameras trained on the fingers of molten lava flowing directly into the ocean. From our vantage point at the edge of the field we couldn't see the ocean entry yet but as I looked out I could see multiple points where there were fissures emanating a bright orange/red glow from the lava that was flowing beneath our feet.
